LOVE & MONEY
OK, I have to admit, DJ Bunga had beat me to this. I’ve been toying with my musings about Love and Money for couple weeks; and just yesterday he’d said it all. So, instead of giving you an intro on LAM, I’ll jump right to what I like and ask that you check out Bunga’s link for a guest speaker POV (he was Stephan Lau’s companions, aka, The Translator).
Pecha Kucha, a subset of LAM
When Bombshelter first told me about their prep for Pecha Kucha, I expected a Mexican party with flowing tortillias and magaritas. Party no, but instead, a line-up of talks by a creative bunch on their love for work or the stuff they love, in 20 slides, 20 minutes. What’s interesting for the audience were the random topics because BC’s brief to these presenters was NO BRIEF. There was an obsesssive Helvetica fan who gave a rundown of the font’s history, DJ Blink on his love for bicycles, a curator and his photo discoveries and Bombshelter ‘10 cool things about being a designer’. So, it hit me! Pecha Kucha (means conversation in Japanese) is a pretty sweet deal for those seeking entertainment, talent hunting, or trend spotting opportunity for people like me. I later learnt that Pecha Kucha was started by 2 achitects from Tokyo to help designers improve their presentation skills (they are long-winded in presentations, apparently), hence the 20 slides/20 minutes rule to curb them from taking too much time to explain one slide. This kinda gathering is viralling around the region. For Malaysia, it is the first, thanks to British Council. One just happened in Taipei, and another one coming up in Thailand (Oakie, look out for it!). I wonder if it's a patented event – or is it free for all to adopt, like a Bunzan’s mind-map.
Wake up Malaysia, we have a new wave of talents. With independent designers coming out, I hope it’ll teach us a thing or 2 about sweat, patience and taking chances in the advertising world. Here are my favourites
Urban creatures – Chun Woei scuplts the most amazing creatures with a bleak story behind. These creatures are up for adoption (only RM49.90) and what’s odd is, he seals the creatures into a metal wired jail for the owner to bring it home. I have no idea why.
Stephan Lau– I only know as much as what the newspapers wrote. Nevertheless, his characters are decent and he knows how to make money from his talent. I like that, plus he drew an original character for me :-).
Lefty, Gilamon – If you've been following Gempak and Hype, you'll know that these Gilamon guys have come a long way to make it as it is. These 2 novel size magazines have been gaining momentum since inception in 2002(?)Lefty is my favourite. I like his work. His 50's cartoon pen strokes reminds me of Captain America era. Power.
Shieko – she’s my all-time sweetheart. Already in my link from Day 1. Need I say more?
Basheer on publishing
“I love you baby” is a contradiction when when you didn’t even pay some artists that was published.
Jamie Hewleet and his sketches It was my first time seeing footages from the Gorillaz concert. What I'm curious with is why 100,000 over people could react frantically to giant size holograms - they are not even human? The power of illusions, aha.
Most pictures courtesy of DJ Bunga, without him knowing. :)
