To budding planners: Know your worth

This news reminds me of Vincent, Tom Cruise's character in Collateral (2004). After all the escapades, Vincent was shot and left dead in an empty LA train. He was so good in what he does that he forgot who he is.

Lunch

In your next visit, I'll bring you a izakaya at Solaris. Simple lunch, cooked cold. Mr Bak hates it but I love it!

(cold tofu dribbled with oyster sauce, century eggs, cabbage pickles with cod roe over a bowl of rice.)

To be Malaysia Inc

"The focus of our future must be on a 'brain economy', where innovation and brain power is the cornerstone of economic policies. Maybe then, our factory workers will earn RM5000 a month and not need to sell goreng pisang and tosai to supplement their income." The Edge, this week.

MOI declare 2010 as Malaysia Creative Year to increase the consciousness that creativity economy will boost GDP. Initial focus will be to boost local film industry and they've already taken steps to improving RTM, our least-loved government TV station.

If you snicker at this, think again in broader sense. What can you get out from this declaration?

Film is not a medium, and it's not just about TV. It would open paths for all content creators be it writing, graphic design, animation, music, marketing, even tech incubation. If you put on your enterprising hat to think in context, how can you manifest these niches into cultural, social and economic innovations?

That's the real intend of what the govt is looking for. They probably know what to do but maybe not how to start. Speed is the new big. So, stop marinading your ideas and START SOMETHING.

Welcome to the industry of imagination.

Snicker, and you'll lose. :=)

Firefly, your community airline

Dear FireFly

Your TV ad just asked me to 'hop on to the environmental friendly flight.' It is a very powerful claim and I totally support airlines who do their bits in saving mother earth. Can you enlight me on how you do yours? I will like to tell my friends.

Yours sincerely,
Bigcityb

Bollywood dance

I'll love to be an extra in the dancing cast!

Settling in with Mr Murakami

It's been a year since the last book and I can't wait to finger this one. Before I start the opening chapter, my ritual is to read up something new about the man, just to get myself into the mood. And here's a lil' excerpt from his interview with Times UK on his love for running and writing.

"He believes that “a fortunate author can write maybe 12 novels in his lifetime. I don’t know how many good books I still have in me. I hope there are another four or five. When I am running, I don’t feel that limit. I publish a thick novel every four years, but I run a 10km race, a half-marathon and a marathon every year”. He gets up at 4am, writes for four hours, then runs 10km. On his tombstone, he would like the phrase “at least he never walked”.

I love his wit.

Eveline Tarunajaja

I pick details over subject any day. That's how I tell a difference in an artist's dedication. The compulsion of getting it right is admirable and I see this in Eveline Tarunajaja, an Indonesian living in Australia. I wish to see this dedication more often in advertising work.

(I want this Whales series!)

Silent cartoons

At age 6:

Mom: Please, stop watching Tom & Jerry

Me: Why?

Mom: What can you learn from a cat chasing a mouse all day. They don't even talk.

Me: It does!

Mom: Yeah, in your mind. You're going crazy.

Now:

Mr Bak: Did you say something?

Me: No. Why?

Mr Bak: I thought I heard you talking to yourself

Me: Huh? Did I? No way.

Mr Bak: Yeah, you said "Raymond, please pass the spade"

Me: Oops.

(Cartoon replaying in my mind)

The wonders of silent cartoons. Is it crazy or plain imaginative?

Be good this weekend!

KLSE

Trading in stock market is like running business. It is cyclical and unending to what means profit. Just like writing, you can go on and on with commas or ellipsis to make a point. But personally, I prefer using full stop. It gives the story a fresh start and also room to grow new ones.

Lessons from a freshmen trader.

Doof, “Plush Booty, No Cooty”.

What the heck is that?

I learnt about Doof from a friend's blog and the first think that came to my mind was ...cute name but the pillow bag business? Hmmm.

That got me wondering...how do people choose the type of business to get into? Obviously, it's driven by the profit and/or passion motives, a mixture of logic and the heart to think there's a gap to be filled - like Wheel Love with their inline skating business. Niche market, esp in Malaysia, yet hoping that the idea will make them money to sustain their passion, or like Youth Malaysia, an online community nurturing young peeps who desire to be someone someday. But for Doof, what were their premise in getting their feet into the pillow bag business? Pillow bags are no new innovation, and I wouldn't dare pin failure in a consumerism world like ours. But to sustain the business with passion for pillows? Neh.

I don't know where this post is heading right now but I'm writing down as a reminder to ask the owners if I get to meet them one day.

Meantime, I salute the Doof team for the courage to Start Something, especially in uncertain times like this. Hey, if you are reading this, drop me a note and give it light.

Gladness

This morning, I received a tweet from Paul asking me what I do during my "long-long leave" days.

For starters, I try waking up earlier than usual for this.

...and go colorwondering for small stuff

...watch things grow in my garden

And read blogs and books with quotes of comfort, like this I don't ever want to be a grown-up who forgets that she was a child first

No guilt. Just taking my time, all :=)

The Smartest Profile

I've been thinking hard on how to introduce my experimental shop at etsy. Been scouting around and found that many (actually, most) profiles reflects the sound of an introduction in annual reports. So, here's a fresh take that I really like, Caperino & Peperone, written in the most concise and engaging manner, ie. conversation. They are the official merchandise designers for KL Design Week '09, and their line, Kuntzel + Deygas will be available soon at http://www.jamdivision.com.

Look out.

This picture is strange

I stared at it for rather long yet i can't find the post that supports the doll. It's suspending in the air. Was scouting at etsy in the wee morning. Can't help feeling eerie about it. Nice skirt though :=)
